Time management is a tricky thing for a lot of people, especially college students. With classes, studying, exercising, working, and so much more, it seems as though students hardly have any time to breathe. There are a lot of factors that come into play when it comes to time management and there are many different ways to go about it.
According to the University of Georgia, there are 10 great ways to start managing time:
1. Know how to spend time
Knowing how to spend time is important, as many college students are, for the first time, living on their own. They may not be sure what to do with their time and how to spend it without teachers or parents telling them what to do. It is important to find a routine that works well for one personally and knowing what needs be done and when.
Setting priorities is also an important part of time management. Creating a list of importance of to do items can be very beneficial when deciding what to work on first.
3. Use a planning tool
Thing can be using a planner, a mobile app, an online Calander, or anything else someone may see fit. Planning things ahead of time and making a day-to-day schedule can help eliminate stress around time management and can also help keep things organized as to when things are due and when they should be started.
4. Get organized
Getting organized can mean a lot of different things, such as using a planner to write down assignment and tests, being physically organized, such as having all resources and materials easily accessible, or even writing a to-do list can help students get organized in their thoughts with what they should be accomplishing next.
5. Schedule appropriately
Scheduling things appropriately is very important. Making sure to allot enough time to complete each task is necessary in making sure everything gets done. This can help with procrastination and also academic burnout.
6. Delegate: get help from others When necessary, it can be nice to ask others for help. For example, asking a friend if they could edit a paper or asking a parent to schedule an appointment is a great idea to remove some extra things from one's plate.
7. Stop procrastinating
Procrastination is one of the hardest things that a lot of college students have to face. It is easy to put things, such as semester long projects, or final papers on the back burner, but once the time comes to complete the assignments, stress can reach a high point which is not only bad for mental health, but also physical health and can cause academic burnout. Working on things as they come in is a great way to reduce procrastination.
8. Manage time-wasters
Managing time-wasters can be different for everybody. For most college students, there biggest time-waster is most likely their phone. Making sure to put the phone down and away will really help with time management and reduce procrastination. Screens in general can be a real time-waster, so limiting screen time would be a great place to start.
9. Avoid multi-tasking
Although multi-tasking may seem like a great idea to get multiple things done at once, it can actually cause more harm than good. Multi-tasking leads to a higher chance of getting overwhelmed, which can again lead to more procrastination. Taking things one thing at a time can help maintain focus, improve work, and lead to overall better time management.
10. Stay healthy
Lastly, staying healthy physically and mentally can help with time management. If one feels the best, the more likely they are to stay motivated and organized. A couple ways to start would be reducing stress and eating healthy. Methods for both of these can be found in the following blog posts:
