Social Engagement

Going off to college can present students with many great opportunities, with many of them being the chance to join new clubs and organizations. Social engagement can be a great way to make new friends, discover new interests, and it can even have some health benefits. It has been proven that more socially active people tend to be happier and more capable of forming lasting connections with others. So, how can one go about being more socially involved?

Clubs

Most colleges offer a wide array of clubs to join. Often, schools will hold club fairs where students can browse at all of the different groups there are and find ones that are right for them. Joining clubs can not only provide new hobbies and interests, but new friendships can also be made.

Activities on Campus

Colleges often host many different activities, such as crafting events or food socials. Partaking in these events can lead to meeting new friends and, again, findings a new hobby.

Study groups

Not only can study groups be beneficial from an academic standpoint, but they can also offer friendships and a time to find people with similar academic/career interests.

Finding a Job

Although this may not seem like a social engagement method, finding a job on or near campus can provide students with the chance of meeting new people and developing professional and social relationships.

Volunteering

Similar to finding a job, volunteering can help academically, professionally, and socially as it is a great opportunity to give back, while also benefiting socially.

Getting involved on and around campus doesn't have to be scary, nor hard. There are many different opportunities that may present themselves that can be beneficial for a student. Social engagement can be really beneficial for many different reasons including making friendships, advancing professionally, advancing academically, and being happier and healthier.
